Crawl Space

What Is a Crawl Space?

Crawl space foundations are very common here in North Alabama & Southern Middle Tennessee. A crawl space is a shallow compartment underneath a home contained by the foundation walls and the floor of the home which rests above the crawlspace (usually 3–4 feet height or less). The crawl space is normally on bare dirt, even when the sides are enclosed, and should have a poly type vapor barrier as a minimum covering over the dirt. In some circumstances, the crawl area may even have a gravel or concrete “floor”.

What Is it for?

Pre- and post-construction, having a house built on top of a crawl space allows for easy access to plumbing, electrical wiring, and ductwork, making home installation, repair, and maintenance easier.
In addition, If your home is prone to floods, this will help to protect you from harm. Crawl areas, on the other hand, can be an appealing breeding ground for a variety of pests. A crawl space does keep your home off the ground and allows for termite inspections under the home where termites often make their way up from the soil in which they nest up into the wood framework of the home where they like to feed.

what kind of pests live there?

Crawl spaces are dark, well-protected from the elements, and warm and damp in comparison to the outside world. As a result, they’re frequently a sanctuary for not only termites but a variety of pests.

The following are some of the most frequent pest problems you’ll find in your crawl space:

• Rodents including mice & rats
• Spiders
• Earwigs
• Ants
• Cockroaches
• Crickets
• Beetles
• Snakes

What is moisture control?

Excessive wetness in your home can lead to a slew of issues. Moisture attracts a wide range of pests to your home’s crawl space, including termites, rodents, and cockroaches, weakens the structure of your home, emits an unpleasant, musty stench, and allows mold and mildew to grow, posing a health risk to you and your family.
